DESCRIPTION: Length 22 - 25mm. A smart Crane-Fly best identified by the flight period, orange body, pale grey-brown thorax and the white lunule that extends across the full width of each wing. The wings also sport a black stigma and at maturity both sexes have green eyes. The female has a short, distinctive ovipositor. BEHAVIOUR: The larvae are found in turf and other similar substrates. DISTRIBUTION: Found throughout most of the UK. HABITAT: Found in damp grassland, woodland edges and hedgerows. PERIOD: May to June.
